17 May May Pointscore
After a shaky start to the year where waves on our allocated weekend were hard to find, we finally got our second Open and third Junior club round under way on Saturday May 15.
The waves had been good all week and there was still enough swell early to get the Junior divisions going just south of the Wall-as the tide turned the 2-3 ft swell increased with a small pulse giving surfers some good clean peaks to work with.
Grace Gosby took it to the boys in the U13’s winning the final with two good waves over Kalani Rowley and Archie Turner who both needed a better backup.
In the Micro’s Oliver Croft just took the win over Sonny Leung in perfect size waves for them in the middle of the beach.
In the competitive U16’s Cruz McKee showed his experience waiting for the good ones and keeping the three Brown boys at bay with a 6.5 and 5.5-there was some controversy with Kash causing an interference on his last wave but he still would have fallen short.
In the Women’s as the swell hit its peak Jaz Schafer dominated, beating Grace in the first round and controlling the final over Kiara Maguire and Jasmine Gosby.
The Masters and Open men then took to the water as the wind picked up offshore and the swell dropped making it a waiting game for the competitors who took to the Wall bank looking for some left rip bowls
In the Masters Adam Brown threw the dice surfing some secret lefts down the beach and by the time the other finalists woke up it was too late leaving Greg Brown and Brad George in his wake.
The Opens started with the low tide and howling offshoes making it hard work with club champion Jay Brown patiently waiting 15 minutes for his first scoring wave-this tactic worked when he caught another just on the bell racking up four backhand whacks to snatch victory over Jordan ,Roan O’Sullivan and Ricky.
Members then had a few beers and a barbie in the memory of club legend Troy Nugget Dennehy who would have turned 50-RIP
